The Voice Awards were developed to acknowledge entertainment writers and producers who give a voice to people with mental health problems by incorporating dignified, respectful, and accurate portrayals of people with mental illnesses into film and television productions. The Voice Awards also provide the opportunity to acknowledge the tireless efforts of mental health consumer leaders across the country who have played a vital role in raising awareness and understanding of mental health problems, and their efforts to reduce the stigma and discrimination associated with mental illnesses.
The Voice Awards are part of the Campaign for Mental Health Recovery, a public service program of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Mental Health Services, and the Ad Council to reduce the stigma and discrimination faced by young adults and others with mental illnesses.
